1903–04 Stoke F.C. season
The 1903-04 season was Stoke's 16th season of league football.
Overview
Off the pitch, Stoke's financial problems continued after spending £2000 on a roof for the Butler Street stand meaning that the season's budget was spent before a ball was kicked.
After the previous season when Stoke finished in 6th position there were many hopes of improvement. However these hopes were short-lived because the 1903–04 season was another poor one for Stoke and their fans. The team were in a deep relegation trouble from Christmas onwards. Arthur Lockett who was a key figure left to join Aston Villa as did Center forward Mart Watkins. Stoke's best signing was Fred Rouse an inside-forward from Grimsby Town he was one of a few Stoke players who showed promise.
At Eastertime there was a case of déjà vu for Stoke as in the 1900–01 season and in 1901–02 they were involved in a final day fight for survival, and once again Stoke survived. Stoke drew on the final match 1–1 against Derby County and that point was enough to see Stoke safe on 27 points one point more than Liverpool who went down with West Bromwich Albion.
